One Of Brisbane’s Most Important History Tours
St Helena Island is Queensland’s most historic island. Conveniently located in Moreton Bay just four kilometres from the mouth of the Brisbane River, this beautiful National Park was home to hundreds of society’s outcasts for more than 60 years. Here stood colonial Queensland’s foremost maximum security prison for men. The Island is rich in history and has a fascinating and colourful past, and offers a range of tours and activities for everyone from school children to tourists.
Cat O Nine Tails Cruises has been operating educational and historical tours to St Helena Island since 1982. Our modern 17 metre catamaran, Cat O Nine Tails, seats 130 and takes only 30 minutes to reach the Island from the bayside suburb of Manly. Tours to the Island operate all year long and we offer day trips and night ghost tours conducted by members of the St Helena Theatre Troupe. These tours won the prestigious Queensland Tourism Award for Heritage and Cultural Tourism in 1998.
An unforgettable experience just minutes from the heart of one of Australia’s most vibrant cities, we give tourists the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the country’s dark, colonial past. See the buildings were many men across more than half a century spent the end of their lives and gain a new insight into pre-Federation Queensland. Many buildings from the period still stand, allowing visitors a rare chance to see intimately what prison life was like in 19th century Australia.
